Emissions come from a wide range of stationary sources. Regulated facilities are required to keep emissions below a threshold that is believed to keep ambient concentrations at or below safe levels as defined by the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (EPA). Despite the large number of regulated sources, fugitive emissions from many smaller natural and man-influenced sources can make up a significant portion of primary emissions, especially for PM2.5.
