Diesel Pollution Indicator: Residential Areas of Concern
Here we show the DPI for the residential areas suspected to be most impacted by diesel pollution.
Diesel emissions measured on these residential roads may be caused by trucks driving or idling within local areas, particularly on roads near freeways and railyards, or on streets that lead to and from warehouses.
Diesel emissions can also be transported to residential areas by prevailing winds. Average winds over the monitoring period were gentle and blew from the south and west, varying by time of day. Based on this and what scientists know about the distribution of diesel pollution in the area, we can infer that residential areas downwind (between north and east) of the BNSF railyard, major freeways, and some warehouses may experience higher diesel pollution than areas farther away from these sources.
