East Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, West Commerce Community Air Quality Report
Area Overview

Why this matters: compare areas of elevated pollution

When Aclima measurements are aggregated to larger areas, patterns of high pollution emerge, which helps community members take steps to reduce exposure. Values of a hexagon can be compared to the nearest EPA regulatory site measurements, to the level of EPA air pollution health standards, or to WHO (World Health Organization) air quality guidelines. Areas emitting higher than area average greenhouse pollutants (CO2, CH4, and BC, a component of PM2.5) can also be identified for further investigation or reductions.

  • For PM2.5, the EPA annual standard is 12 µg/m3 (averaged over 3 years) and areas with darker red exceed this value. Extended exposure can potentially result in adverse health effects.
  • 0% of the measurement area has higher NO2 pollution than the EPA threshold of 53 ppb.
  • 100% of the measurement area has higher NO2 and PM2.5 pollution than the WHO guidelines of 5.3 ppb and 5 µg/m3, respectively.
