Traffic Pollution Indicator: overview
The TPI provides insights into light- and heavy-duty vehicle emissions, while the Diesel Pollution Indicator (DPI) is focused on diesel emissions primarily from heavy-duty trucks and trains, possibly allowing distinction between areas with more gasoline and diesel emissions. The TPI is based on concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The small distinction between gasoline and diesel emissions is possible with the TPI because gasoline engines emit a higher fraction of CO per unit of energy than diesel vehicles.
Road segments are identified as having elevated diesel emissions at their locations based on two levels of Aclima's TPI: High and Medium. These measurements give us a detailed and scientifically rigorous approach to seeing the patterns that this pollutant indicator exhibits.
