Sensitive Sites: air quality trends where sensitive populations spend time
Schools, healthcare facilities (hospitals and other), childcare centers, community centers, libraries, public housing projects, and parks are locations where sensitive populations visit and spend their time. Many of these sites are located near major roads and freeways, which often have high fine particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, black carbon, and carbon monoxide due to emissions from motor vehicles. These areas are also downwind of the industrial, commercial, and railyard located in the west and southwest of SBM. While where unhoused community members live can be difficult to identify on the map, those who shelter under or near freeways are exposed to high levels of PM2.5 and other pollutants caused by vehicles.
