Traffic Pollution Indicator: overview
The Traffic Pollution Indicator (TPI) identifies high vehicle emissions that are most likely to impact areas near freeways, given their high traffic density, and communities where sensitive sites such as schools, childcare centers, and health care facilities are of greatest concern. These measurements give us a detailed, scientifically rigorous approach to seeing the patterns that this indicator exhibits.
The TPI is based on concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) – which is known to cause harm to public health – and carbon dioxide (CO2) – which is known to contribute to global warming. While the Diesel Pollution Indicator is focused on diesel emissions primarily from heavy-duty trucks and trains, the TPI provides insights into light- and heavy-duty vehicle emissions. Carbon monoxide and CO2 are emitted by the most common vehicles on the road that are powered by diesel, gasoline, and compressed natural gas (CNG) engines, where gasoline engines emit a higher fraction of CO than diesel vehicles per unit of energy.
